Caz Internship Program
The Caz Internship Program is a service, and learning experience for young campers who want to grow their leadership skills, explore what a future in the arts and arts education can look like, and provide support to camp teaching artists and staff.
Interns will be an essential part of what makes Family Camp run by providing support to classes, camp operations, and community events all while being able to participate in the creative and communal life of camp.
What Interns Do
Interns are assigned their responsibilities based on camp needs. While interns will be able to submit class preferences for all 4 periods just as all campers do, intern placement in classes is at the discretion of the executive director of Family Camp. During class hours, interns will only be required to be of service for a maximum of two periods.
Responsibilities may include:
Serving as accompanists in music and performance-based classes
Moving musical equipment, instruments, and supplies as needed
Supporting load-in and load-out of camp as a whole, as well for classes, rehearsals, and performances
Ringing of daily bells
Helping sound engineers with tech for events and classes
Filling and maintaining water coolers and shared hydration stations
Helping set up and break down classes each day
Assisting with community dining set-up and clean-up
Assisting Teaching Artists during classes including but not limited to:
Aquatopia
Recyclophonics
Clowning and Circus Arts
Motown Band
Rockband
Cabaret
Backstage Theatre
Gospel Choir
Reggae
Songs from the Screen
Mime
Family improv
Puppets
Interns should be prepared to be flexible and step in wherever help is needed. In some cases, interns may be pulled from a class or activity if camp needs arise during their allotted service period.
All interns also help support camp events and performances, including setup, transitions, backstage support, and other production needs.
Intern Schedule + Participation
All interns get to participate in camp life, including community events, meals, performances, and activities.
Each day interns will:
Work a minimum of two periods per day (on shift)
Have the opportunity to take one to two class or elect to have a free period
Depending on staffing needs, may receive up to two periods off
Because interns are part of the camp support team, schedules may shift throughout the week depending on camp needs.
Orientation + Community Welcome/Laison
Interns are expected to arrive early and attend Intern Orientation the day before campers arrive.
Interns will also be part of the Welcome Committee, that greets new and returning Caz’s campers and staff. They help them find their lodging accommodations, class locations, necessary amenities, etc. Interns will also assist in answering any questions regarding scheduling campers may have about camp.
Each intern will be assigned a new family or several new campers to welcome, helping them get oriented and feel at home within the camp community. It’ll be important for that intern to periodically check in with those new campers / families throughout the week to ensure that their camp needs are being met.
Leadership + Daily Check-Ins
The internship is supported by Jessica Jones, a longtime Caz Teaching Artist and professional musician, who will serve as Intern Program Coordinator. Jessica will be checking in with our interns throughout weeks to ensure that each intern is staying engaged, learning from their experience, taking notes and if they are desiring anything more from this internship program.
Interns will also meet every morning with the Executive Director or Operations Manager for brief check-ins to reflect on what they are learning, ask questions, and support their growth throughout the week.
At the end of the week each intern will be required to deliver a full oral report on what they learned from the classes and teaching artists they during the week to the Executive Director, Operations Manager and Intern Coordinator.
