Questions specific to Summer 2021

When does registration open for 2021?

Registration is open now for Caz California. To register for Session A (August 2-8), click here. For Session B (August 9-15), click here.

Due to public health concerns, Caz Northwest will not operate in 2021 as its intended dates were too early given pace of vaccine rollout in the region. All information on this page is applicable specifically to Caz Family Camp at our California site.

When will campers sign up for classes?

Classes will be announced one month before camp, and all campers will be able to enroll at that time. For the first time this year, our registration process for Caz California will include the opportunity to indicate general preferences for each camper—which we will use to the best of our ability to determine what classes to offer. When registering, we will ask you to check up to five areas of interest for each camper out of the following list:

Arts and Crafts/Visual/Photography
Circus Arts
Creative Writing/Storytelling/Writing/Songwriting
Dance/Movement
Music – Choral/Vocal
Music – Classical
Music – Folk/Country/Bluegrass/Irish
Music – Jazz/Swing
Music – Rock/Funk/Motown
Music – World Music
Music Production/DJ/Sound
Nature Arts/Exploration
Theater Arts, including Musical Theater
Yoga/Wellness/Meditation

How will camp be different in 2021, given coronavirus-related risks?

Throughout the information on this page you will find minor modifications of aspects of camp. Read on for major adjustments, based on public health guidance, which relate to occupancy, costs, timing and programming.

Public Health Guidance
Camp will operate in accordance with the most up-to-date guidance available from the CDC, the state of California, and Sonoma County. We at Cazadero Family Camp are fortunate to have additional, site-specific policies developed by our landlord, Cazadero Music Camp. These will be updated regularly in the period leading up to camp this summer, and Caz Family Camp will operate in close adherence to these policies. As in past years, we will have a nurse on site throughout both Session A and B. In addition, we expect that to the extent individuals’ age and medical status allow, everyone attending camp will have documentation of receiving vaccine before camp begins.

Occupancy and Costs
While there are aspects of risk reduction that will depend on circumstances at the time of camp, there are some judgments that had to be made in March in order to plan for camp. The most significant decision was to limit camper and staff numbers so that our maximum total occupancy will be 70 percent of past years. Limiting numbers is essential in order to enable adequate social distance during camp, and minimize shared spaces to the extent possible.

Lower occupancy has an impact on various aspects of camp. For one thing, our costs to operate camp will not decrease proportionally. In fact, in many ways we will incur additional costs due to covid precautions. The board has decided to operate camp at a loss, but even so we unfortunately have to pass on some of our additional costs to campers. Every camper will see a special covid charge, $110 per session for adults aged 19-65, and $67 per session for seniors and children aged 2-18. (These are in addition to a 2.5% increase in regular camper fees to account for inflation.)

Timing and Programming
Also, in order to facilitate thorough cleaning before, between and after Sessions and B, the timing for arrival and departure at camp will be adjusted for 2021. Expect that camp will start a half-day later (Monday evening) and end a few hours earlier (Sunday after breakfast).

Finally, we ask that all campers and staff bring the wonderful flexibility and creativity our community has always enjoyed, because a smaller camp means that there will be fewer program/class options than we’ve been able to offer in the past. We believe that the more intimate experience will be just as soul-nourishing as camp always is, and we look forward to seeing how everyone will make camp “uninhibited, unusual, unprecedented—but never unrehearsed!”

What will be the policy for refunds in the event public health requires cancellation of camp?

We will keep all registered campers updated with the latest information. If public health guidance requires significant changes or cancellation of camp, all deposits will be refundable minus an administrative fee of $100 per family.

Can campers leave camp and return during the week?

In order to reduce risk of coronavirus transmission and exposure, campers and staff will be asked to stay at camp from the beginning to the end of each session this summer, except in emergency situations.

Are scholarships available for Family Camp?

Yes, limited financial assistance is allocated every summer to families for whom full fees pose hardship. The application for financial aid is available this year within the registration process.

What are the accommodations like at Family Camp?

There are a range of housing options at camp. There are a limited number of dorm rooms that accommodate up to three people. The dorm rooms are frequently reserved for campers with limited mobility or families with young children. We have numerous tent cabins which are canvas tents stretched over permanent wooden frames with decks of various sizes. In addition, many campers bring their own tents or van for camping at a discounted rate.

Camper families can request to share a tent cabin or dorm with another family/group. Note: In 2021, this option is only available for people who have been operating in a “pod” or “bubble” together for an extended period before camp.

All campers and staff use shared bathrooms and showers, located at intervals throughout camp.

The only way campers can stay offsite and participate in Caz camp activities is if they stay at Raymond’s B&B across the road from Caz.

Can campers invite guests to join us?

Most years, Caz Family Camp encourages campers to invite friends and family to visit for performances. As part of our planned precautions due to Covid-19, we will not be admitting guests in 2021. We hope to have them all with us in 2022!

Is there a swimming pool?

Yes, Caz California has a swimming pool. If public health guidance permits use of pools in summer 2021, water activities will be open during designated times and under supervision of our lifeguard.

Do I need to bring my own instruments to camp?

Most years, we are able to offer the opportunity to rent an instrument for a nominal fee, although the majority of campers bring their own instruments and amplifiers to camp. In 2021, we hope to offer this option again. Please email info@cazfamilycamp.org to discuss if necessary.

What is the food like at camp? Can camp accommodate various dietary needs?

At Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp we are fortunate to feast on fresh, local, and, whenever possible, organic food. Our kitchen staff will work with you to accommodate many dietary restrictions, but may not be able to meet all your needs. A auxiliary refrigerator is available for people with special diets. Please bring your own storage containers and label with your name. In 2021, depending on public health guidance, meals may be served differently than in the past as there will likely be limits on the number of people who can eat in the dining hall at one time.

What to bring to camp?

All campers will be mailed a packing list in the weeks leading up to camp. The packing list is a helpful resource, especially for first time campers! Please remember to bring a warm jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a water bottle. And of course your instruments and amplifiers as needed for your assigned classes. We urge all campers to bring Covid-safe fabric masks, which will be more effective at protection than disposable masks we will stock.

Other questions about Caz Family Camp

Pets are not allowed at camp. Here is information about bringing a service animal to camp.

Will there be internet or cell service at camp?

Cell service and internet connections are not available at camp. Many campers remark at how wonderful it is to be unplugged for a week, especially for family bonding. In case of emergencies, you are encouraged to share the Caz California office phone number: (707) 632-5159

What is the weather like at camp?

Daytime temperature can range from low to mid 50s in the morning to 70-80 in the afternoon. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing a good pair of walking shoes.
