SESSSION A – 2011 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
PRE-CAMP CLASS!
I Can’t Stop Swinging (all ages)
Break out your boa and pearls! Yes, once again, the impromptu Caz Swing Band will provide the back-up while you provide the voice! You will sing a solo or duo jazz tune that you prepare ahead of time for our Wednesday night camp jam. Pick a tune from the “Just Standards Real Book” (Alfred), contact me with the title and key (if you know it) and off we go! Must be pre-arranged with Richard before camp starts, but ALL are welcome. Early Morning Activities
Stretch Class at 7:30 – 8:30 am (all ages)
Drop-in class. Begin each morning by stretching into your day. Stretching helps you to have higher energy levels during the day and be able to maintain the energy level you need for all of your Cazadero classes throughout the day. Each morning we will do stretches for the hips, hamstrings, shoulders, neck, back and wrists. All levels and ages welcome. Bring a sticky mat or towel. (Melanie Green, limit 15-20)
8:00 am Morning Wake Up Band: (all ages welcome)
This is am impromptu, volunteer camper band dear to our hearts for its many surprises. We have woken up to the sounds of tuba solos, angelic choirs, roving ukulele bands and energetic rattles in the hands of our very young campers. Meet at Kid City to warm up at 7:50 am daily and start the musical procession through camp.
Circus Band at 9:00 am (6 – adult)
What would the Caz circus be without a band? Join the Caz circus band and help to set the mood and the pace for our talented cast of clowns and acrobats. Rehearsals are Tuesday through Saturday at 9:00 AM sharp in the piano room. All ages and instruments are welcome if you can sight-read music at the intermediate level or beyond. Bring your instrument, stand, pencil and a chair the first day. (If you have a stand light, please bring that to camp.) (Lisa Chattler, no limit)

P1 – African Dance (6 – Adult)
Come enjoy West African dance from Guinea! We will learn simple sequences of movement. Any age is fine if you can follow choreography. (Tacuma King, no limit)
P1 – The Art of Animal Tracking (12 – Adult)
Ever wonder what strange and furry creatures lurk about the camp after dark? (Insert joke here…) Through the use of sketching, prepared track traps, photography and motion triggered infrared cameras, we endeavor to answer the question. You will learn basic tracking skills, track gathering techniques of the field biologist, and how to look more deeply into the mysteries of Nature. Our collage of results will be displayed as art on the final day of camp. (Anthony Fisher, limit 10)
P1 – Big Fun On Steel Drums (6 +)
Classes will focus on different styles music played on the “Pans” (steel drums). Students will have fun playing in a steel drum ensemble and learn some basic rhythm, harmony, and melody. No experience is necessary. No reading is required. All instruments will be provided. (Mark Rosenthal, limit 11)
P1 – CircleSinging/Improvisation ( 12- adult)
This class will utilize the art of CircleSinging to explore improvisation. CircleSinging is an art form popularized by Bobby McFerrin which is used to create songs, relax the mind, meditate and enhance the improvisation experience. All levels are welcome from beginner to professional. Participants will learn how to put a CircleSong together, create improv over what has been created, and ways to morph what’s been created into something else without stopping. This is a great tool for writing your own songs and enhancing the singing and/or writing experience! (Bryan Dyer, no limit)
P1 – Circus Arts (6 – adult)
This class has something for everybody! Whether it is stilt walking, juggling, or standing on a globe, you will find something you love and will love performing at the Cazadero Clown and Circus Extravaganza on Saturday night! P1 – Creative Spirits – Visual Art Adventures (11-16)
A creative adventure into color, line, and images. Using chalk, paper, hot glue guns, acrylic paint we will weave some tales, bump into some myths and mysteries, creating pieces of art for ourselves, for our friends and family. (Mark Wagner, limit 15)
P1 – Creek Walks (6 – adult)
Come explore the wilder side of camp! We’ll dig under rocks, climb up canyons, and discover little critters living in the creek. You’ll be amazed at how much life there is just outside your cabin walls – frogs, dragonflies, blue jays, salamanders, and so much more. Meet me at the pool, wear shorts and sun protection, and be ready to get your feet wet! (Craig Nelson, limit 20)
P1 – Kid City – Creative Play w/ Christina (2.5 – 5, but all welcome to drop-in)
Christina brings her bag of tricks to engage and entertain our youngest campers. Clowning, puppetry, scarf dancing, story telling, magic and more!!! Please refer to the end of class descriptions for details about Kid City. (Christina Lewis, Rosemary Richie, Kerry Yates, no limit)
P1 – Motown Band (12 – adult)
Motown Band makes its debut at Caz this year! This band is a smaller counterpart to Rock Band, geared toward more advanced players looking for a more intensive ensemble experience. We’ll cover several classic Motown songs, focusing on arrangement, presentation, and very tight ensemble playing. Horn players (trumpet, sax, trombone) strongly encouraged! P1 – One for All and All for Violin/Viola! (8 – adult)
C’mon over, join our merry band, and learn to play the violin! We’ll be learning simple fiddle tunes, mapping out the chords and working on how to create solos. This class is designed for beginners through intermediate level players, but even if you know NOTHING, you are welcome to sign up. You’ll be playing at least 3 songs by the end of the week. P1 – Roots Piano! (12 – Adult)
Level: Beginning-plus through Intermediate
Prerequisite: Ability to read basic keyboard notation; familiarity with major and minor chords and scales.
New class! This class introduces some of the many wonderful styles of “roots” piano — blues, jazz, Caribbean, and South African. These styles all have a deep groove and are deeply rooted in their culture of origin. Come get your groove on! There will be a class performance at the end of the week. P1 – Reggae/Latin Jazz (10 – adult)
Calling drummers, guitarists, bassists, pianists, percussionists, horn players, and whomever else is interested in playing some chill grooves. We are gonna jam on three songs from the genres of Reggae, Latin Jazz and one surprise. No experience in the genres necessary but intermediate proficiency on your instrument is encouraged! P1 – String Band (13 – adult)
Open to all acoustic stringed instruments. We will learn a range of songs from Appalachian, Cajun, Celtic, Swing, and more. Learn some great melodies, improvise, and have fun as part of the Cazadero String Band. (Steve Gibson, limit 10)
P1 – Taiko: Japanese Traditional Drumming, Beginning (8 – adult)
Taiko in the Japanese classical arts have a history spanning close to two thousand years, and modern taiko drumming (kumi-daiko) is quickly taking the world by storm. Students will learn to play and perform Taiko. And, learn some Japanese culture and language. This class is taught in the strict tradition of martial arts; discipline, focus, and mutual respect of the students will be stressed. Everyone will be expected to be on time and practice what is taught. You may either bring your own sticks or purchase some from Susan. This year Taiko will be seriously fun! if you have hesitated in the past or felt intimidated, this is the year for you to try Taiko. Memorization of parts will be minimized, fun maximized, but will still be taught in the tradition of Taiko discipline. (Susan Horn, limit 10)
P1 – Yoga Flow (all ages)
This class is suitable for yoga participants of all ages and levels. We will practice the basic sun salutations and will incorporate various yoga postures great for increasing balance, strength and flexibility. You will learn and deepen your experience of yogic breathing. There is ongoing encouragement to find an interior steadiness in the face of discomfort that can be experienced in some postures. P2 – Clowning Around (6 – adult)
Did you ever feel that there was a ridiculous character inside of you just dying to get out? Then this is the place for you! Through improvisation and creative play we will create silly characters and wacky stories to perform on at the Cazadero Clown and Circus Extravaganza. P2 – Creative Non-Fiction (13 – adult)
In this class, we’ll be creating stories from our own lives, taking what actually happened and coloring it with detail to make it more exciting to the reader. This one’s all about the introspective part of us. Come with ideas, leave with stories. You will be writing in every class, so be ready for that, too. (Jacob Rubin, limit 20)
P2 – Creative Spirits – Visual Art Adventures (15 – adult)
A creative adventure into color, line, and images. Re-generate your creative spirit if you’re an adult, if you are a teen… well you already know how to get down and make some cool art. Using chalk, paper, hot glue guns, acrylic paint we will weave some tales, bump into some myths and mysteries, creating pieces of art for ourselves, for our friends and family. P2 – Didgeridoo Workshop (8 and up)
Learn to play the ‘Didge’ with one of its acknowledged contemporary masters. The Australian Aboriginal people believe that the Didgeridoo has been played since time began. Expand and ground your journey on this planet with learning the fundamental principles of circular breathing and the endless drone, animal calls, an introduction to Aboriginal culture and more. No experience necessary, instruments provided or bring your own. (Stephen Kent, limit 15)
P2 – Digital Photography, Composing in the camera (13 – Adult)
Using the beauty of Cazadero as both our backdrop and subject, we will explore ways to improve our photography through better composition, and learn by doing. No matter if you are using a basic “Point and Shoot” to a high end DSLR, the keys to making a better photograph are easy to grasp and impossible to completely master. In class we will review shots and then try to get out and shoot some more. Bring your camera, your manual (if you can find it: it will help answer questions that come up), batteries and your charger. P2 – Djembé, beg and advanced (6 – Adult)
Learn various styles of using djembé techniques; we will explore body mathematics, correct posture, how to hit the drum. For beginners and advanced players all ages. Tacuma will bring only 5 or 6 djembé. Please let us know if you can bring your own or everyone will have to share and take turns. (Tacuma King, limit 10)
P2 – Beginning East Coast Swing Dance (12 – adult)
Come join long-time camper Monica Volk and competitive swing dancer Mark Weiss for a week of introductory swing dance! We will cover East Coast and Charleston, and hopefully have time to introduce some other types of swing dance (depending on the level of the class). This class would be a great refresher for someone who already knows some swing, or a fun introduction to our favorite kind of dance! No partner or dance experience necessary.

P2 – Gospel Choir (7 – adult)
Have you always wanted to sing gospel music? Well here’s your chance! You are invited to be part of Family Camp’s rockin’ and soulful gospel choir! You will learn and perform spirituals, along with contemporary and traditional gospel music. Students will learn vocal and performance techniques, rhythms, and harmony. Singers from beginners to advanced, of all ages, are encouraged to join in the fun of learning and singing this exciting music. All you need is willingness, a sense of humor, commitment, a passion for making a “joyful noise”! (Bryan Dyer & Libby McLaren, no limit)
P2 – Guitar, Beginning (11 – adult)
Join me for a fun introduction or re-introduction to the guitar. We will learn the chords that are used in all your favorite music and get a chance to make music as a group, including learning how to play riffs or melodies. The class is designed for beginners but is open to anyone who wants to review open position chords and have fun playing with other guitars. (Steve Gibson, limit 10)

P2 – Piano Plus! For Kids (6-12)
Level: Beginner
Prerequisite: None.
In this lively and interactive class, kids 6 through 12 will get acquainted with the piano, learn the basics of music notation and rhythm, and learn several simple tunes. Kids will learn by ear, by reading notation, through music games, and through both individual and group play. We’ll do a small performance at the end of the week.

P2 – Rock Band (9-adult)
Come join the most rocking giant rock band of all time! Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists with at least basic proficiency on their instruments. We’ll have fun playing through 2 or 3 songs, focusing on arrangements, dynamics, soloing, and establishing a strong groove; we’ll play one tune at open mic on Friday and choose the best one for the final performance. Guitarists should know most major and minor chords. Bass players should be able to find root notes at the bottom of the neck. Drummers should be able to play a simple steady groove, and keyboardist/ pianists should know major and minor chords. Bring your instruments and amps. All instruments welcome. P2 – Stage Sound Production (13 – adult)
Want to learn how to run the sound system? Or maybe as a musician you just want to understand what the sound tech is doing? This class provides a comprehensive introduction to live sound production. You’ll learn about different kinds of microphones, mixers, and sound processing equipment; how to set them up and use them; how to control sound levels and avoid feedback. You’ll get to run the main sound system and stage monitors for open mic performances in the amphitheater. (Andy Fuchs, drop-in)

Using California soapstone, a soft but beautifully grained material, we’ll carve, sand, polish and wax sculptures ranging from small pocket fetishes and pendants to large sculptural pieces of 5-6 pounds. We provide all the tools you’ll need, although you might want to bring your own pocket knife. The stone is available for sale by the pound. (One Band-Aid per student is also provided!) P2 – Ukulele (11 – adult)
Join the Caz ukulele ensemble! This class is open to those who are new to uke, as well as those who might already know a few chords. (Tru Peterson, limit 10)

Open Mic with Tru Peterson (All welcome)
Open mic is one of the gems of Family Camp! Every day you can come to the amphitheater and perform in a safe, casual and supportive environment. Songs, instruments, solos or whole bands, dances, poems, stories, classical, rock, jazz and rap, it all happens every day. Please note, each act will be limited to 3 minutes, which will hopefully allow everyone to appear more than once. Don’t be shy! Dust off that song or dance and try it out on a great Caz audience! Daily from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. with an extra hour on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Sign up sheets are posted on the sidewall of the amphitheater. (Tru Peterson, drop-in)

In this class you will experience a vigorous flow style of yoga, linking breath with movement. It is designed to strengthen, align and purify the entire body and mind. P3 – Computer-Based Home Recording (13 – adult)
Learn how to make great recordings at home on a small budget. The technology to produce professional-level recordings costs only a fraction of what it did just a few years ago. In this class we’ll explore the basics of recording using a Mac and a few other pieces of equipment. We’ll discuss how to use microphones; how to use audio software to record, process, and mix music; and some aspects of session procedure. We’ll have a quick look at how MIDI instruments integrate with the digital studio. Finally we’ll use these tools and techniques to record a tune and burn CDs of it. Big tech fun! Students are welcome to bring their own computers with GarageBand. (Andy Fuchs, limit 10)
P3 – Contra Dance Band (10 – adult)
ANY instrument welcome and ALL players must have experience on your instrument–basic note and chord reading skills required). In the continuation of this “performance class”, you will learn several traditional Irish and American tunes that have been played at Contra Dances all over the US and UK for centuries. We will specifically be learning the tunes that we will play at the Friday night Contra Dance where we will ROCK as the “Caz Contra Band”. We are guaranteed to have a great time as we become proficient with the tunes. I will be assisted in this class by the esteemed Richard Vaughan. This will be a really fun class! P3 – Five guitar styles in 5 Days (13 – Adult)
Join me for a whirlwind tour through 5 different approaches to playing guitar. Each day we’ll take a look at a different approach to guitar playing. I will provide handouts and talk a bit, but we’ll focus on making much music. The styles to be covered will be, African guitar, DADGAD tuning, Slide guitar, Blues fingerpicking, and Improvisation. P3 – Jazz Band (12 – adult)
For people who have some experience on their instruments (school band, lessons, etc). You should be able to read music, as we will be reading some great (but not too hard) big band charts and learning to swing. We’ll also work on improvising, and everyone will get a chance to solo. Experience on your instrument is necessary, familiarity with jazz is not. Fedoras recommended but not required. Music Theater Dance — Learn fun, theatrical dance choreography from a big production number of one of your favorite musicals: Hairspray! Beginning to advanced dancers welcome. (Kimberly Dooley, limit 30)
P3 – Necklace from Nature (10 – Adult)
This project begins with the ancient human skill of processing raw plant stems into cordage. Pine nuts, abalone shell, bird bones and other bits of nature will be our palette for creating this unique piece of earthy, wearable art. We will be using as many stone age tools and methods as possible so bring your patience, strong fingers and your desire to learn. (Anthony Fisher, limit 10)
P3 – Piano Coach! (8 – Adult)
Level: All levels
Prerequisite: Simple! The desire to play piano at Open Mic or in the Camp Dance. All levels welcome.
New class! Have you wanted to play at Open Mic or in the fabulous Camp Dance, but not felt ready or felt outnumbered by all the wonderful guitar players and singers onstage? In this class you get your very own piano coach! Jennifer will help you prepare a piece for Open Mic (and accompany you if appropriate), or a piece to either feature or join in on for the Camp Dance. This can range from Chopsticks to Ray Charles, Motown to Mozart! Beginning-level players are very welcome along with more experienced players. There will be some sheet music, duets for folks to team up on, and charts at all levels available to choose from, or you can bring your own. Checking in with Jennifer before camp if you have a specific piece already in mind is strongly suggested (but not necessary). We will play an old time tune, a montuno, a West African composition, and a rock progression. We’ll each have a chance to solo and comp. Tab versions of tunes will be provided. Come and jam on the beautiful simple tunes under the redwood trees. You need to bring your instrument and amp if necessary. This is a class geared toward guitarist, but all instruments are welcome. P3 – Songs from Around the World (all ages)
From the Aboriginal Crowd Jam to the Polyphonic chants of the Ethiopian highlands to the Balinese Ketjak and the folk songs of England people have been making music with only their voices and the barest accompaniment since the beginning of history. Let’s explore some of these songs and chants from around the world. (Stephen Kent, no limit)

P4 – Beatboxing/Vocal Percussion/Vocal Exploration (7- adult)
Your body is an instrument- capable of an endless amount of sounds and tones. Come and learn how to take what you already have inside of you and create a vocal symphony with almost limitless capabilities. Learn how to simulate the sounds of a drum kit – explore and share sounds, beats, rhythms – use non-traditional tones to make musical expression. There are a host of sounds that come from your body and here is your chance to find them. (Bryan Dyer, limit 15)
P4 – Caribbean Ensemble (6 – Adult)
This class is for any and all musicians who want to get a Caribbean groove on! All levels and all instruments are welcome. Of course we will include steel pans if you would like to play the pans! Some charts will be provided but it is not necessary to read music to be a part of this ensemble. We especially need horn players to make this class really “hot,hot,hot”. P4 – Electric Bass (10 – adult)
Open to electric bassists of various levels. We will go over the roles of the bass in music as the “sonic bottom” and create some seriously cool jams using a variety of techniques and ranges on the bass. P4 – Family Fun & Games (6 – Adult)
An exciting, fun-filled class offering participants a variety of Creative Movement/Theater, Yoga, Dance and Drama games and activities encouraging playful interaction for the whole family. Come learn new games and share your family’s favorites with others. No experience necessary – no pressure to perform – all ages welcome. Registration for the week is encouraged. P4 – Famous Fights (10 – Adult)
A fun and exciting scene study class, Patrick will direct you in a famous fight. From Taming of the Shrew to Star Wars to Charlie Brown or The Princess Bride, you will no doubt find a deliciously combative scene to sink your teeth into. P4 – Gypsy Jazz, intro (13 – adult)
This class covers the fundamentals of playing gypsy jazz, a music style that was made popular by Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Over the past 10 years there has been a resurgence of interest in gypsy jazz, leading to a growing number of modern gypsy jazz bands and superlative contemporary gypsy jazz artists that are helping to keep this music alive today. This introductory class will focus on learning several typical gypsy jazz songs. We will also cover rhythm and improvisation techniques. Also planned is a facilitated jam (time and place to be determined) open to anyone at camp who wishes to participate. P4 – Harmonica (10 – adult)
Want to learn to play the harmonica? Nothing can compare to the lonesome sound of the harmonica, whether you’re sitting around the campfire or doing time in prison. Join Les and Mike in a class designed to teach beginners to play tunes on their own by the end of the week. If there are intermediate/advanced players we’ll break them out and offer more advanced lessons. Beginners – All you need is a harmonica in the key of C. Buy a decent one made by Hohner, Lee Oskar, or Suzuki. If you don’t bring one, we’ll have inexpensive Hohner Blues Band harps available for you to purchase. P4 – Piano: Popular Piano Harmony
Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of notes, keys, and key signatures.
With a piano, we will explore the harmonic basis of some of the most popular songs from the Beatles to current Top 40. We will learn how to play some of these songs, providing a consistent piano texture with nice voice leading between inversions. Analyzing the harmony will then enable us to understand effective/common chord changes and apply them to any key. (Zach Sorgen, limit

For those of us who can’t bear to practice slowly. Take that hard passage, that knotty figure, and stretch it out into a long phrase. We’ll each add in our individual tongue twisters at snail speed, to concoct a multilayered confection that makes slow practice almost as exciting as windsurfing. For winds, strings, vocalists, and sensitive percussionists. Familiarity with 12 (or at least 4) keys will be helpful but not essential. (Gael Alcock, limit 10)
P4 – Song Interpretation for ANY song, ANY style and ANY body (10 – adult)
What is it about some singers who sing the way you LOVE, and some that don’t touch your heart at all? Well, it’s all in the interpretation of the words, the melody, plus a bit of your life experience thrown in. In this safe and insightful class, you will bring in a song or two, that you already love to sing. We will work, as a class, on how to deepen your interpretation of the song, and have you singing it by the end of the week with a whole new level of understanding and appreciation. You will have open mic every day to try out what you have learned, if you want to. Please bring a lyric page with chord changes written on it for all songs that you bring for the class. We can figure out the key that is best for you while at camp. I will be your accompanist on piano, unless you accompany yourself on the song already, either on piano or guitar.
